Photo24 2016: British Museum

Last weekend, and for the second time, I took part in Photo24.  This is a 24 hour photo event in London, organised by Photography News and sponsored by Nikon.  My mate Vic and I joined 250 other photographers, from across the country, in a hotel in Coven Garden at Noon on the Friday, with the aim of making it back there 24 hours later.  In between there would be regular meet-ups across the city and some organised trips.

Last time, Vic and I went into the day without any real plan.  This time, we had a clearer idea the places we definitely wanted to hit and how we could best link these together.  First stop was the Great Court at the British Museum.  I know this is a location that has been done to death photographically speaking, and by better 'togs than me.  But I had never shot it properly, and since we were near by, it seemed the logically start.   Naturally, we first headed to the viewing gallery that offers 'the shot'.  But after that we explored the court more fully.  I particularly enjoyed the lead-lines and frames it offered for people shots.  We managed a couple of hours there before heading to the first official meet-up.

A Stroll Along The South Bank

Sorry, yet more street candids.  Last weekend I visited London again and took a leisurely stroll along the South Bank to soak up the Olympic atmosphere, and generally waste a day.

I didn't encounter many foreign fans.  I guess that, unlike me, they must all have tickets.  Fortunately, there always seems to be a group of orange-clad Dutch fans when you need them.

Inside the South Bank Centre is a maze made of books, an art installation for the London 2012 Festival.  It was tricky to photograph with very mixed lighting conditions.  The first shot gives an idea of the general scene.  The second was probably my most successful attempt.  I particular liked the little girl.  Her stripy shirt and glasses made me think of 'Where's Wally'.  I have a similar shot of her by herself, but sadly it's not sharp.

One From Baker Street

I was in London last weekend for a food festival.  It wasn't a photography weekend (it was an eating weekend), but naturally I did have a camera with me.  I got nothing useful at the festival, but did get this shot on a walk down Baker Street.

Camera Club Annual Print Competition

Saturday was the camera club's annual print competition, which was held at Harston Village Hall. The main room made a fantastic exhibition space.

All The Fun Of The Fair

More low-light stuff I'm afraid. Taken on Bonfire night at the fair on Midsummer common that accompanies the Cambridge display. Sue described me to another club member as a 'night photography expert'. I think she just meant that I do a lot of it. It is certainly a type of photography I find both endlessly fascinating and endlessly challenging.

Some More Cambridge Low Light Pictures

I haven't been taking any pictures lately, and I am still playing around with the pictures I took at Derwent Water in September. So, for the sake of putting a post up, here are a few more low light pictures from the, now not very recent, Abbey Horizons shoot.

Another Abbey Horizons Points of View

In the middle of September there was another mini Points of View Competition organised for members of the Abbey Horizons group. Just like the last one, this was modelled on the annual competition of the same name, only a little smaller. With the nights already drawing in, the feel of this evening was very different to the previous event held at the height of summer. The themes were:

1. Debris, decay or dereliction.

2. Church or churchyard detail.

3. Artificial light.

4. Freestyle.

However, as well as taking one picture for each of the 4 subjects, there was also the option to do a panel of 5 images on just one of the subjects. Since night photography is a passion of mine, I chose an artificial light panel. For the panel I concentrated on picking people out againt the lighting.

Ramsey 1940s Weekend - A Few More

A new season has started at camera club and things are getting hectic. I've had no time to take any new pictures, so here are a few more from Ramsey to show willing.

Ramsey 1940s Weeked

A few pictures from the 1940s weekend of the re-enactors. Portrait photography really isn't my thing. So rather that trying to sweet talk people into posing for me, I stuck to candid pictures. It helped that a lot of the people there rarely broke character. Even when they thought people weren't looking.
