Naples: When It Rains...

I took the sleeper train from Turin to Naples, arriving a little before 9.00am. After an extended pause, working out how to access my accommodation, I dropped my bag and was free to explore the city. Just in time for a heavy thunderstorm. I was walking down a main touristy shopping street (think Oxford Street before all the money-laundering candy stores) when the rain came in hard. I took shelter in the foyer of an art gallery and started shooting the passers-by.

A Frosty Foggy Morning

A few shots from a walk around the riverside park in St Neots, on a recent frosty and foggy day.

Fields of Snow

Last Sunday, we finally got some snow.  It didn't start snowing until 12.00pm, but by 1.00pm there was a good covering.  So, I pulled on the winter hill gear, grabbed the Olympus and headed out over the fields. I only had a few hours of daylight left.  Luckily, a year of walking these fields meant that I knew exactly where I wanted to go and how to get there with the paths no longer visible.  It kept snowing lightly all afternoon and keeping the lens clean of snow was a constant problem.  I had to delete more than half the images I took because of snow spots.  However, I did get some shots I am very pleased with.

Cambridge Street Photography

Last Saturday Ann organised a photohunt for CCC members in Cambridge.  Twelve cryptic photo clues led to 12 locations.  The idea was that you found the thing in the photo and either took your own photo of it or the area around it.  I decided to concentrate on street photography at each of the locations.  Some locations gave more opportunities that others.  I have posted a gallery featuring one shot from each location on the CCC website.  Here, I will just show a selection of my favourite shots of the day.

Note for posterity:  Under changes to the Covid19 regulations, this was the first weekend that it was mandatory to wear a face mask in shops.

It had been cloudy all day, and around 4pm the heavens opened.  But, as the old hill-walkers saying goes, 'there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing'.  Luckily, I had the right clothing with me, and once I was suitably Goretex wrapped I managed to get my favourite shots of the day.

A Foggy Morning In St Neots

Last Saturday I woke to a beautiful foggy morning.  Perfect photography conditions.  But where to go to take best advantage?  I decided Granchester might be a good bet.  The meadows would have interesting trees and there might be some activity on the river.  Then I could work my way down into the centre of Cambridge.

My only concerns were that the fog might not be as strong in Granchester or that it might not last until I got there.  So to play safe, I decided to get a few shots by the river in St Neots first, before moving on to somewhere more interesting.  However, it turned out that my safety stop gave me all I wanted.  Some great trees, swans and rowers on the river.  I spent the whole morning getting shots there and didn't bother with Granchester.  So the lesson is, never ignore your local patch.
